The Iconic Ford Mustang Makes Its Debut

One of the most iconic vehicles ever produced by Ford is the one and only Ford Mustang. It all started way back in 1964 on this very day in New York City where the very first pony car was unveiled for the world to see.

American muscle cars had not yet established themselves as a staple in the automotive world.

However, after the launch of the Ford Mustang on April 17th, 1964, they were soon thrown into the spotlight and became one of the most sought-after cars in history for many more years to come. What was once an industry that only focused on European muscle cars, soon because business as usual for many North American auto makers.

Once the Ford Mustang was released and welcomed with open arms by the public, many other car makers followed suit and started releasing their own version of the Ford Mustang. However, nothing could even come close to this mainstay in muscle car history.

The very same day that the Mustang was presented to the public at the New York Auto Show, it also went on sale to the general public. Not only did the Mustang sell units on its first day, but it also sold a whopping 22,000 units, which was unheard of for its time.

Ford’s sales target for the first year of the Mustang was roughly $100,000. However, after selling 22,000 on the first day alone, they were blown away by the first annual sales revenue that the Mustang brought in.

Ford attributes part of the sale to the fact that the Mustang was one of a kind upon release, but also because it had a very low-ticket price of just under $2,400 (which equates to approximately $18,000 today).

Who Designed the First Ford Mustang?

It was in 1960 that the design and development of the Mustang took place. However, it wasn’t until 4 years later when it would finally be presented to the world.

The driving force behind the Ford Mustang’s design, as well as the marketing for it, was Lee Iacocca. He and his team of engineers and car designers came up with the idea of the Mustang as a way to fiercely compete with and capitalize on the European sports car market.

Iacocca and his team collaborated with Hal Sperlich to create the Mustang’s original design. The Mustang combined the sleek and stylish design of a sports car with the power of an American muscle car. And thus, the Mustang was born. It would become the best-selling Ford vehicle since the Model T.
