It was a cold New Year’s Even in 1879, when the first automobile that was powered by gasoline made its first run. The creator of this vehicle, Carl Benz, would go down in history for producing the world’s first 2 stroke, one cylinder, motor vehicle.

Although at first glance this automobile resembles a bicycle more than it does a car, the overall construction, engineering, and how it was powered was essentially what inducted into the automobile category. This single unit of a chassis and an engine would go down in the record books as the first automobile created.

The First Two-Seater by Benz

Ironically, Mercedes-Benz launched the two-seater SMART car in 1998. Made to traverse busy urban traffic, small roadways, and be extremely fuel economic, the SMART car was a welcomed addition to a busy automotive world.

Oddly enough, the first vehicle Benz produced on his own was also a two-seater. Although it wasn’t a SMART car, it was definitely smart in many other ways for its time. It had a sophisticated cooling system for the engine, which was unheard of at the time. Also, it had an output of 0.75 horsepower, a controlled exhaust valve, and even spark plugs.

Much like any invention, a patent is an essential component to protecting your ideas, design, and ultimately your creation. In January of 1886, Benz applied for his patent for a vehicle powered by a gas engine. Six months later, news of the first public outing on his vehicle would hit the papers, and things only went up from there.

Who Created the First Automobile?

While many record books state that the first automobile was created by Carl Benz or Gottleib Daimler, the real truth is that the world’s very first automobile was actually created by Nicolas Joseph Cugnot of France.

Bertha Benz Takes a Road Trip

A couple years later in 1888, Carl Benz’s wife Bertha, decided to test out the new and improved version of his automobile with his two sons Eugen and Richard. Their trip, totaling 180 kilometres round-trip, would prove just how practical owning a motor vehicle would be for the entire world.

A trip this length on horseback would have taken between 10-12 hours. However, when made on the first automobile made by Carl Benz, the trip was completed in more than half that time (which was a considerable improvement at the time).

Their trip started in Mannheim (where the Benz family lived) and ended back at their home after first visiting Bertha’s birthplace, Pforzheim, Germany. Thanks to her public and astounding display of what their automobile could do, their automobile manufacturing company of Benz & Cie would quickly climb to be the world’s largest automobile plant of its time.

Double-Pivot Steering Enters the Automotive World

In 1893, Carl Benz acquired a patent for yet another great invention, the application of the double-pivot steering system.

The introduction of this new steering mechanism created a massive improvement to the steering, handling, and capabilities of the modern-day automobile at the time.

The newly founded steering system would help to completely eliminate the wobble that typically came with automobiles in that era.

The Contra Engine Design by Benz

Another great achievement from Benz was the contra engine. It was the first engine to use opposing cylinders instead of the traditional one-sided cylinders.

This was the birth of the horizontally opposed piston engine, which became a staple in all Benz vehicles up until the 1900’s and were always installed in the rear of the vehicle, not the front.
