There are so many reasons love British Columbia. From the amazing crystal blue lakes that make summer swimming feel endless, to the exceptional mountain peaks of Whistler, that is every skier’s dream. It’s in the great outdoors BC offers us that we as Vancouverites, take true pride in the province we call home.
Although beautiful and breathtaking in every way, living in the Lower Mainland doesn’t come without a price tag. As residents we pay higher rent and mortgages than most of the country, and also spend hours on the road commuting to help reduce living expenses anyway we can.
However, the thing that drives many of us crazy the most (even worse than rush hour traffic on the Alex Fraser bridge)? Our weather.
How to Prepare for Lower Mainland Winter Weather on the Roads
From freak rainstorms to freezing rain to our least favourite, snow. We all have to navigate our precarious Metro Vancouver and Fraser Valley roads when they are unfavourable to say the least. But is there a way to make our winter driving conditions any less torturous? Absolutely.
From having the right tires for the conditions, to windshield wipers that clear our window well, every little thing we do makes a difference. But what about the type of vehicle you’re driving? Is it really made to endure all that Vancouver winter weather has to offer? If you feel like perhaps it doesn’t, it may be time to buy a vehicle that is made to handle our unpredictable winter months.
The Best Cars for BC Winters Under 10k
While these vehicles may be numbered, it doesn’t mean they are listed in order of importance or even handling capabilities. In fact, many of these vehicles are quite comparable to one another, and all handle exceptionally well in the wet winter snow we experience here in Metro Vancouver, as well as the Fraser Valley.
12. Suzuki SX4
Suzuki has always been known for making great cars that handle well in all conditions, and it’s no different when it comes to producing a vehicle that is not only great for Vancouver winter weather, but also for getting around through narrow and busy streets in Downtown Vancouver.
The Suzuki SX4 is easily one of the most underrated compact cars for driving in the snow. This tiny little hatchback may be small, but it comes packed with power, capability, and of course, all-wheel drive.
If you’re looking for a vehicle that makes zooming through traffic and parallel parking a breeze, while also being able to safely climb the hills of North Vancouver on a cold winter’s day, the Suzuki SX 4 is for you.
11. Honda Fit AWD
Another vehicle that is surprisingly small but handles well in the snow is the Honda Fit. And just like its fierce tiny competitor (the Suzuki SX4), it also comes available in all-wheel drive.
Living in Metro Vancouver can be expensive, which is why so many people have a side hustle like delivering for Skip-the-Dishes or Uber.
When you need to get around the city in a hurry on a wet and slippery winter’s day, there’s no better way to do that than with a Honda Fit. Although it’s not designed to have a large seating capacity or cargo space, it does the job.
From the top of Grouse Mountain all the way out to Cultus Lake, the Honda Fit will have you winter ready this year. They are difficult vehicles to find under $10,000, but not impossible. It could be in part because Honda vehicles seem to last forever, but we think it’s also due in part to their brilliant design which makes them perfect for all conditions in Metro Vancouver.
10. Toyota Matrix AWD
Everyone knows that Toyota vehicles are incredible to own, and much like their #1 rival Honda, they have the highest resale value on the market, along with incredible durability and longevity. But did you know that many Toyotas also handle exceptionally well in the wet winter snow? Well, now you know.
The Matrix AWD is a sub-compact car that packs a big punch when it comes to overall handling on winter roads. Coupled with a great set of snow tires, there isn’t anywhere the Matrix can’t go. It’s the perfect go-to vehicle for Vancouverites and Fraser Valleyians (?) alike.
Unfortunately, it’s another great car that is tough to find under 10K, but definitely not impossible, and totally worth the effort to search. It’s no wonder why we buy so many Toyota vehicles the minute any of our customers approach us with one.
If you’ve been considering selling your Toyota car, truck, SUV, or minivan, give us a call. Additionally, if you’ve been thinking about selling your current car to help facilitate getting into a new Toyota, we can help there too. We always offer the MOST cash for cars in Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, and Vancouver Island.
9. Audi A4 Quattro
While owning an Audi isn’t inexpensive, you can find a few of the A4 Quattro’s for under 10 k.
Which if you can, we can pretty much guarantee you’ll never feel safer traversing snow and ice in a sedan than when you are riding in
The Audi A4 comes with amazing safety tech, comfortable and very responsive handling, and of course, their amazing Quattro AWD system. Thus, making it a fierce contender for one of the best cars to drive in winter weather in British Columbia.
Keep in mind that the Audi A4 requires a timing belt change around 160,000 kms. So, before purchasing a used A4, make sure that the timing belt has already been replaced, or be prepared to have it changed yourself before it becomes a problem
8. Select Hyundai Models
What was once a vehicle known for poor durability and reliability, Hyundai has now climbed the ranks in the automotive world as an overall great vehicle to own. Also, they continuously add all-wheel drive vehicles to their line-ups, making it a great choice for Vancouver winter driving.
Hyundai Vehicles with All-Wheel Drive:
- Kona
- Tucson
- Santa Fe
- Palisade
- Ioniq 5
- Santa Cruz
These models are either hybrid, EV, or available in either option, as well as the traditional gasoline powered engines. They come with a wide selection of available features and creature comforts, and all come in 2WD or AWD.
7. Select Kia Vehicles
Much like Hyundai, Kia once had a very bad rap for building and designing cars with poor reliability scores.
However, they too have come a long way over the years, and Kia now produces some of the best winter driving vehicles.
Kia Vehicles with All-Wheel Drive:
- Seltos
- Sportage
- Sorrento
- Telluride
Aside from the obvious AWD SUV’s that Kia makes, some of their sedans, while not AWD, also handle very well in the snow.
In fact, the Kia Optima has a phenomenal grip on the road with nothing but a simple set of all-season or decent winter tires on it. This is due in part to its wide stance and long wheelbase, and also its incredible handling capabilities.
6. Lexus RX
Anyone who has ever owned a Lexus vehicle will tell you that they are not only comfortable, luxurious, and a premium ride, but that they handle well in wet, snowy, and icy conditions. After all, Lexus is a division of Toyota, and Toyota too makes great all-weather vehicles.
The Lexus RX is one of the automaker’s best performers when it comes to navigating slushy winter roads in Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, or Vancouver Island. This mid-sized SUV is available in both front wheel and all-wheel drive options.
When you combine the Lexus’s great handling, superior road grip, and a great set of winter tires, it will make climbing the Coquihalla seem like a daydream, instead of a nightmare. Perfect for weekend getaways outside of the Lower Mainland.
5. Ford Escape & Explorer
No self-respecting Canadian list of best cars for driving in the snow would be complete without a Ford Explorer or a Ford Escape on it.
That’s because we as Canadians know that the Explorer and Escape are one of the best SUVs you can buy to handle the crazy winter weather conditions that we experience here in BC.
Unfortunately, one of the drawbacks of owning a Ford Explorer or Escape is that at some point or another, you’ll run into transmission problems. If you’re trying to buy a used Ford SUV for winter driving, be sure to have it inspected by BCAA or your local mechanic first.
This is one of the reasons we buy so many Ford vehicles in the Lower Mainland.
Either transmission issues, other mechanical problems, or simply someone wanting to trade up to a newer model. Fortunately, we buy vehicles in ANY condition. New, old, good condition, rough around the edges, mechanical problems, even collision damage. No matter what condition your vehicle is in, we’ll buy it and offer you the MOST cash for your car.
4. Subaru Outback, Forester, Impreza, & Legacy
Nothing says 4×4 quite like Subaru vehicles, and boy are they made for all conditions, not just the snow.
Whether you’re mud-dogging through mud pits up a logging road in Chilliwack, or rock crawling up at Stave Lake in Mission, a Subaru will get you there, and not just their SUVs.
It’s only natural that a vehicle made to endure all conditions can conquer the slippery snowy weather that Lower Mainland gets hit with every year. And while these vehicles are made to last, one thing to watch out for before buying one used is the head gasket.
A common problem with buying a used Subaru is that the head gasket needs to be done around 140,000 kms. If the one you’re considering has higher mileage than that, you’ll need to check with the seller to see if it’s already been done. If not, factor that into whatever price you offer them.
3.Jeep Liberty
Everyone knows that a Jeep is the be all end all to 4×4 vehicles. If you own a Jeep, chances are, you can go anywhere. However, they are definitely a premium vehicle, and as such, it comes with a premium price tag.
Fortunately, there are certain models that are more affordable when bought as they no longer make them. The Jeep Liberty is one such model.
The Liberty was discontinued in 2012, and the Patriot and Compass were offered to consumers in its place. All are very similar in terms of steering, durability, and of course, AWD. If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative to the traditional Jeep to get you through the snow this winter, a used Jeep Liberty could be the best answer.
2. Honda CRV
You can never go wrong with a Honda SUV. They are built to last, withstand even the toughest conditions, and have better than most gas mileage. This is a big reason why we at Cash For Cars BC love buying Honda vehicles, including the CRV.
Hondas retain their resale value better than any other vehicle on the market today. This is why car buyers in Metro Vancouver love getting their hands on them, and we are no different. Plus, nothing can plough through slushy winter roads better than the smart, compact, but resilient Honda CRV.
With 150 horsepower and AWD, the SUV that was originally built on a Civic platform is made to traverse even the slickest mountain highways, like the Sea-to-Sky. If you are planning a trip to Blackcomb this winter, the Honda CRV is the vehicle under 10 K to get you there.
1. Toyota Rav 4
Taking the first spot on our list of best vehicles for winter in the Lower Mainland under 10 k is the Toyota Rav 4, and for good reason.
Toyota consistently has their trucks, the Tacoma and Tundra, in the top spots years after year for best trucks in Canada. This is because they are made to last and offer some of the best 4×4 capabilities in the country. The Rav 4, though smaller and an SUV, is one in the same.
With more cargo room than most SUVs in its class offer, a better visibility for its driver, and mostly standard AWD, the Toyota Rav 4 is an excellent choice for any Vancouverite wanting a vehicle to tackle both city and mountain roads this winter.
Even though Toyota’s hold their resale value much like Honda and Jeep vehicles, you can still find some very good Rav 4’s for under 10 k. Plus, even older models with high kilometres are still a good bet as Toyota’s durability is virtually unmatched.

There are a variety of factors that can impact what our car buyers will offer you for your car. We consider the general Canadian Black Book value, but also a variety of other things.

That’s why more people choose to sell their cars to Cash For Cars BC over any other used car buyers in the Lower Mainland.
