On December 25, 1985, a pair of young men would make a Christmas to remember by being the first people in history to drive the farthest on a single battery charged vehicle.

On Christmas day in 1985, David Turner and Tim Pickhard drove a fully electric vehicle known as the Rover Leyland Sherpa from Lands End in England to a town called John O’Groats in Scotland.

The trip was intended to prove that electric vehicles were not as impractical as many engineers and car makers made them out to be. Also, it was to test how far they could drive on a single, solitary charge in an SUV.

The unlikely duo managed to traverse a whopping 1408 kilometres (875 miles for our metric readers), and that’s more than most vehicles get on a single charge today.
